You can then specify the <code>tex</code> or <code>texi2dvi</code> commands as a <code>compile-command</code> and have Emacs run it by typing <kbd>M-x compile</kbd>. This creates a special shell called the <samp>*compilation*</samp> buffer in which Emacs runs the compile command.
